Literacy Certificates

Graduates of Winthrop's program will meet South Carolina course requirements for literacy teacher and/or literacy coach certification as well as South Carolina Read to Succeed certification.

Winthrop University's master's in literacy education is also designed to give certified classroom teachers the knowledge and skills for jobs as literacy teachers and literacy coaches. As a literacy teacher, you would work with students to develop their ability to read, write and think critically. As a literacy coach, you would help teachers learn to create and deliver instruction that fosters students' literacy practices.

  • To receive state certification as a literacy teacher, two years of successful teaching experience are required.
  • To receive state certification as a literacy coach, five years of successful teaching experience are required

Candidates who complete the program without teaching experience will not receive certification.

Students are responsible for verifying certification requirements in the state in which they plan to teach.

Field Experience

Field experience is required as part of Winthrop University's online master's in literacy education. You'll practice real-world skills that are immediately relevant to your career.
