Through this concentration, you’ll explore the history of school counseling and examine major trends impacting this field. The coursework will help you understand the vital role that school counselors play in educational settings, reinforced by instruction on ethical practices and legal considerations. Guided by our expert faculty, you’ll learn methods for planning, implementing and evaluating school counseling initiatives that make a difference for students.
School Counseling Required Courses
This course provides an introduction to professional school counseling and consultation encompassing the history, philosophy, and trends in school counseling, as well as the roles and functions of the professional school counselor. A major portion of this course is the study of ethical practice, which will cover ASCA and ACA codes and standards, as well as legal issues in counseling practice.

This course provides an understanding of the planning, organizing, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive school counseling program including consultation and supervision models, practices, and processes.

Yes, there is a residency.
Beginning Fall 2026, all fully online master’s students must complete a CACREP-required residency as part of the CSDV program. This residency enables faculty to directly assess students’ core counseling skills and professional behaviors.
Residency Details:
- Course: CSDV 602 Counseling Skills
- Format: Two consecutive days (Friday–Saturday) on campus
- Timing: One weekend between October and December
- Attendance: Students must attend one of two scheduled residency sessions offered during the fall semester
Students will work directly with faculty and peers following a structured schedule at a predetermined campus location.
