Gary C. Guffey, Ph.D.

Professor

Gary C. Guffey earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Mass Communication from the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. He attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, to obtain a Master of Arts degree in Journalism and Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina for a Master of Business Administration degree. At Indiana and the University of Georgia he enrolled in many media law courses. Dr. Guffey did his undergraduate work at High Point University in High Point, North Carolina, where he double majored with a Bachelor of Arts in Media Communication and a Bachelor of Science in Business and Economics. He also attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for accounting.

Before teaching Dr. Guffey worked in the industrial paint business for PPG industries. Later, he owned and operated Greensboro Trade Coatings as a PPG dealer.  He also worked for SESAC as a music licensing consultant.

A lifelong learner, Dr. Guffey understands the importance of teaching and training others for their life goals and experiences. As an educator, he tries to provide a custom path catered to each student to help them excel in their own way.

Dr. Guffey has taught at the college level for over two decades. His areas of interest and expertise are media law with a copyright law concentration, media research, media relations, media management, business communication, and professional development. As a communication instructor, he knows the pace of technological change provides a challenge to be relevant to student needs. With so many new ways to deliver content, the teaching/training process itself continues to evolve which adds a component of continued learning to embrace and appreciate the enriching others’ lives.
